Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about artificial turf
Pets & Kids
Safe for the whole family
Absolutely! Our Pet Yard package is specifically designed for pet owners:
- Antimicrobial fibers prevent bacteria growth
- Non-toxic materials safe if pets chew on grass
- Enhanced drainage for quick drying after use
- Zeolite infill neutralizes odours naturally
Dogs love playing on turf, and you'll love not having muddy paw prints in your house!
Pet waste cleanup is easy:
- Solid waste: Pick up as you would on natural grass
- Liquid waste: Drains through naturally, rinse occasionally
- Odour control: Weekly rinse with hose, or use enzyme cleaner monthly
Our Pet Yard package includes zeolite infill that naturally neutralizes ammonia odours from urine.
Yes! Our turf products are:
- Lead-free and non-toxic
- Free of harmful chemicals
- Softer and more cushioned than natural grass for falls
- Free of allergens, pests, and pesticides
Many parents choose artificial turf specifically because it's cleaner and safer for play areas.
Artificial turf is much more durable than natural grass. The combination of turf, infill, and compacted base makes it very difficult for dogs to dig through.
Most dogs lose interest in digging on artificial turf because there's nothing interesting underneath - no bugs, no cool dirt, no smells to investigate!
General Questions
Basic information about artificial turf
Modern artificial turf is made from high-quality synthetic fibers, typically polyethylene or polypropylene. These materials are designed to look and feel like natural grass while being incredibly durable.
The turf is constructed in layers: the grass blades are attached to a backing material with drainage holes, and infill (usually silica sand or rubber) is added to keep the blades upright and add weight.
Not anymore! Today's premium artificial turf is virtually indistinguishable from natural grass. We use turf with multiple blade shapes, colours, and textures that mimic real grass perfectly.
Most visitors won't realize it's artificial unless you tell them. Our design visualization preview lets you see exactly how realistic it will look in your yard before installation.
Artificial turf can get warm on hot summer days, similar to a deck or driveway. However, it's typically 10-15 degrees cooler than concrete surfaces.
A quick spray with the hose cools it down instantly. Many of our customers find that the turf cools quickly once the sun moves or in the evening, and their pets and kids still enjoy playing on it throughout the summer.
Artificial turf offers several environmental benefits:
- Eliminates the need for watering (saves thousands of litres annually)
- No gas-powered mowing or lawn equipment
- No pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers needed
- Lasts 15-25 years before replacement
While synthetic materials are used, the water savings alone make it an eco-friendly choice for many homeowners.

Installation
What to expect during the process
Most residential installations are completed in 2-5 days:
- Small areas (under 400 sq ft): 1-2 days
- Average backyards (400-800 sq ft): 2-3 days
- Large projects (800+ sq ft): 3-5 days
Projects with significant grading, complex shapes, or hardscape integration may take longer. We'll provide an accurate timeline during your consultation.
We remove all existing grass, weeds, and organic material as part of the installation. The debris is hauled away and disposed of properly - you don't need to do anything.
We then excavate 3-4 inches and build a proper base of crushed rock and sand to ensure proper drainage and a stable surface.
Yes! Artificial turf can be installed over concrete, pavers, or rooftop decks with proper preparation. We use a foam underlayment to provide cushioning and drainage.
This is a popular option for patios, balconies, and rooftop spaces where traditional landscaping isn't possible.
Not necessarily. Once we have access to the work area and have discussed the project details, our crew can complete the installation independently.
We recommend being present for:
- The initial setup and walkthrough
- Any mid-project decisions
- The final inspection and walkthrough
Maintenance
Keeping your turf looking great
Artificial turf requires minimal maintenance compared to natural grass:
- Monthly: Brush to keep blades upright (5 minutes)
- As needed: Remove leaves and debris with a leaf blower
- Occasionally: Rinse with water to remove dust
- Annually: Inspect edges and seams
That's it! No mowing, watering, fertilizing, or pesticides needed.
Most spills can be cleaned with water and a mild soap solution:
- Food/drinks: Rinse with water, use mild soap if needed
- Grease/oil: Mild degreaser and water
- Chewing gum: Freeze with ice, then scrape off
- Paint: Mineral spirits or paint remover (test first)
For stubborn stains, we're always happy to provide guidance.
Yes! Our turf systems are engineered for excellent drainage. The backing has perforations that allow water to pass through, and we install a proper base layer that channels water away.
Most turf systems drain at a rate of 30+ inches per hour - far faster than any natural lawn. Your turf will dry quickly after rain.

Municipal Rules & Bylaws
Know the rules for your city (Updated 2026)
Backyards: 100% allowed. No permits required for standard landscaping replacement.
Front Yards: Toronto zoning explicitly requires % of "soft landscaping".
- The Rule: 75% of your front yard setback (excluding driveway) must be "soft landscaping".
- The Good News: As of 2024, high-quality permeable artificial turf IS considered soft landscaping in many interpretations, provided it absorbs water.
- Recommendation: We install permeable sub-bases that meet drainage requirements.
Mississauga: Permitted in front and back yards. Must maintain proper drainage (which our systems do).
Brampton: "Widening" driveways with turf is a common grey area. If you are replacing grass with turf, it is generally permitted. If you are paving over grass, you need a permit. Since turf is permeable, it usually bypasses the "paving" restriction.
Vaughan: Very turf-friendly. The city categorizes it as a "pervious surface" as long as it is installed on a draining base (not concrete).
Richmond Hill: Similar to Vaughan. No specific bans on artificial turf frontages.
For 95% of residential projects (replacing existing grass): NO permit is required.
You only technically need a permit if you are:
- Altering the grade/slope of your land significantly
- Building a retaining wall >1 metre high
- Widening your driveway onto city property
Disclaimer: We check specific property zoning during our consultation.
Health & Safety Standards
Your family's safety is our priority
Absolutely NOT. We never use recycled tire rubber (crumb rubber) in residential installations.
We only use safe, natural infills:
- Silica Sand: Clean, rounded sand for weight and blade support.
- ZeoFill (Zeolite): A natural volcanic mineral that neutralizes odours (perfect for pets).
- Envirofill: Acrylic-coated sand with Microban antimicrobial protection.
Yes. We exclusively source turf from manufacturers that certify their products as PFAS-free.
We understand the concern around "forever chemicals" and ensure our supply chain meets the highest safety standards for residential use in Canada.
While synthetic turf can warm up in direct sunlight, our high-quality turf features "CoolBlade" technology that reflects UV rays.
Safety Tip: On extremely hot days (30°C+), simply spray the turf with a hose for 10 seconds. Evaporative cooling instantly drops the surface temperature by 10-15 degrees for hours.
Quality artificial turf typically lasts 15-25 years with proper care. The lifespan depends on:
- Amount of foot traffic
- UV exposure
- Quality of installation
- Basic maintenance
Our products are designed for Canadian climates and come with a 15-year manufacturer warranty.
Yes! Our turf is specifically chosen for Canadian climates:
- Handles freeze-thaw cycles without damage
- Snow can be shoveled or left to melt naturally
- Drains properly even after ice and snow
- UV-resistant to prevent fading
Many customers find their turf looks better than natural grass in spring because there's no brown thatch or dead spots.
Our 15-year manufacturer warranty covers:
- UV degradation and fading
- Fiber deterioration
- Backing separation
- Material defects
We also stand behind our installation work. If there's ever an issue related to how we installed your turf, we'll make it right.
Yes! If a section of turf gets damaged (burns, tears, stains that won't come out), we can:
- Patch small areas with matching turf
- Replace larger damaged sections
- Re-seam or re-secure edges
Repairs are typically quick and affordable, and the patched area blends seamlessly with the rest of the turf.
